The recorded evidence of AD 1755 Atlantic tsunami on the Gibraltar coast

چکیده
Evidence of the AD 1755 tsunami consisting of the same type of accretions produced by the re-deposition of earlier sediments, has been recorded at three different height along the coast of Gibraltar: Along a shallow sandy shore, the tsunami wave reached a run-up of 2–3 m, whereas along steep, cliff–lined shores (Rosia Bay) it surpassed 5 m. An overwash deposit was also identiied at the bottom of a lagoon (The Inundation), at 0.5 m b.s.l., on the isthmus that joins the Rock with the mainland. Southern submerged platforms (Vladis Reef) were also affected by the erosional backwash to a depth of 22 m. The tsunamigenic sediments exhibit a bimodal granulometry, mainly composed of sands with a coarser fraction composed of marine faunal shells remains, together with larger clasts derived from the rocky substrate. All remobilized sediments were dated by historical methods and radiocarbon dating.

The 2004 Sumatra tsunami as recorded on the Atlantic coast of South America
The 2004 Sumatra tsunami propagated throughout the World Ocean and was clearly recorded by tide gauges on the Atlantic coast of South America. A total of 17 tsunami records were found and subsequently examined for this region. Tsunami wave heights and arrival times are generally consistent with numerical modeling results. Maximum wave heights of more than 1.2 m were observed on the coasts of Ur...
متن کاملNew study of the 1755 earthquake source based on multi-channel seismic survey data and tsunami modeling
In the last years, large effort has been done to carry out multi-channel seismic reflection surveys (MCS) in SW Iberia to locate the active tectonic structures that could be related to the generation of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake and the tsunami. The outcome of these researches led to the identification of a large, compressive tectonic structure, named Marquês de Pombal thrust that, alone can a...

In the Tsunami of Dec. 26, 2004, although there was a large distance between the earthquake center of Indian Ocean and coastal cities of Iran, the Tsunami waves brought some damages in Chabahar coast. This means that if the earthquake center was closer to Iran, Iran’s coastal regions would have confronted serious danger... In the present study, we used ComMIT software (Community Model Int...
متن کاملPaleo-tsunami history along the northern Japan Trench: evidence from Noda Village, northern Sanriku coast, Japan
Throughout history, large tsunamis have frequently affected the Sanriku area of the Pacific coast of the Tohoku region, Japan, which faces the Japan Trench. Although a few studies have examined paleo-tsunami deposits along the Sanriku coast, additional studies of paleo-earthquakes and tsunamis are needed to improve our knowledge of the timing, recurrence interval, and size of historical and pre...
متن کاملThree Dimensional Numerical Simulation of Tsunami Generation and Propagation Due to Makran Subduction and run-up on Chabahar Bay and Makran Coasts
Makran subduction located at the northwest of the Indian Ocean nearby the southern coast of Iran and Pakistan. Makran subduction is the source of tsunamis that threaten southern coast of Iran. In this article, generation and propagation of 1945’s tsunami initiated by Makran subduction is simulated. For the three dimensional generation of the wave, advanced algorithm of Okada is adopted. The CFD...
